Medical care received abroad
Overview
If you fall ill or are injured while travelling abroad and must see a doctor, National Health Insurance may refund part of the cost, but only for treatment that is covered in Japan. Treatment received for the purpose of going abroad is not covered. Claim after returning to Japan, within two years of the day of treatment, with all documents complete. A medical statement (Form A) and a receipt statement (Form B) are needed for each hospital and each month. Processing usually takes about six months.
