Birth lump-sum payment under National Health Insurance
Overview
Insured people who give birth receive a lump-sum childbirth payment of 500,000 yen per child, paid to the household head. Stillbirths and miscarriages after 85 days of pregnancy are also covered, with a doctor's certificate. With the direct payment system, the hospital receives the payment and you pay only the difference, if any. Without it, apply at the counter or by post after the birth, within two years of the day after the birth. A birth abroad cannot use the direct payment system and must be applied for in person after returning to Japan.
