My wardsTurning 20: national pension enrolment
Overview
For people turning 20: enrolment in the national pension is automatic for people living in Japan aged 20 to 59, except members of the employees' pension or a mutual aid association. Notices arrive about two weeks after the birthday. If no notice has arrived after about two weeks, register at the ward office or the pension office. Students, and people who cannot pay, can apply every year for an exemption or a deferral of premiums.
Automatic enrolment
People living in Japan aged 20 to 59 must generally join the national pension. At 20, the Japan Pension Service enrols you automatically. About two weeks after your birthday you receive a notice of enrolment, a basic pension number notice, a premium payment slip, and forms for the student special payment system or for exemption and deferral. Members of the employees' pension or a mutual aid association are excluded.
Basic pension number notice
The basic pension number notice shows your basic pension number, a 10-digit number used by all public pension schemes. Keep it safe for life: you use it when you change schemes, for example when you start or leave a job, and when you claim a pension.
The basic pension number notice is not sent to people who were members of the employees' pension or who receive a disability or survivors' pension.
If no notice arrives
If no notice has arrived about two weeks after your 20th birthday, you must complete the enrolment procedure. The pension office also accepts the filing.
Premiums that are hard to pay
- Premium exemption or deferral (application)
- Student special payment system
- Exemption for the period before and after childbirth
Students apply every year, for school years from April to the following March. Non-students apply every year, for the exemption and deferral years from July to the following June.
Some schools are not covered by the student special payment system. In that case, students can apply for exemption or deferral.
