My wardsMy Number for foreign residents on the register
Overview
Explains the My Number system for foreign residents on the resident register, who are covered in the same way as Japanese nationals. Notification cards were sent to them in 2015 by registered mail, to their registered address. Notification cards were abolished in 2020, and a notification letter is issued for new numbers. My Number does not replace the residence card or the special permanent resident certificate, which are still needed. Questions go to the My Number Section of the ward.
Who is covered
Foreign residents on the resident register are covered by the My Number system in the same way as Japanese nationals. Details of the system are on the ward's My Number page.
Notification cards in 2015
In 2015, foreign residents of the ward received a notification card, sent household by household by registered mail to the address on the resident register, without forwarding. For a person whose resident register shows a usual name, the card shows both the registered name and the usual name.
Notification cards abolished
Notification cards were abolished in 2020. For a new number assigned since then, a notification letter is issued instead. Changes to the card and reissues are no longer possible. A card remains valid as proof of the number only while its printed details match the resident register.
Residence card and special permanent resident certificate
The residence card and the special permanent resident certificate are still needed after the start of the My Number system.
